A woman and two young children escaped unharmed when fire damaged the kitchen of their home, Thursday morning.
East Ridge firefighters responded to the call at 707 S. Lovell just after 11 a.m., officials said. Fire Chief Mike Williams said that the woman was cooking when grease caught on fire.
Chief Williams said the woman tried to extinguish the fire by dousing it with water. A neighbor came to the woman’s aid and tried unsuccessfully to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher before a 911 call was made.
Fabian Timmons said that his girlfriend was the woman inside the house. Timmons lives a few blocks over and came to the burning house immediately.
“I told her to call the fire department and to get out of there,” Timmons said. “I’m glad everyone is OK.”
Fire officials said the fire extensively damaged the kitchen and the rest of the house sustained smoke damage.
