Tom Card, a former East Ridge City Councilman and Vice-Mayor, passed away on Monday.
Card, who served the city as an elected official for eight years, may be most remembered for his design of the East Ridge city flag.
Tom was born in Pikeville, but spent most of his life in the Chattanooga area. He graduated from Central High School and attended Chattanooga State Community College. He served his country honorably in the US Marine Corp and earned the rank of Sergeant.
Tom was an active member of Burning Bush Baptist Church and traveled to Central America with their mission’s ministry. He was a member of the East Ridge Masonic Lodge as well as the Shriners and volunteered many hours putting out flags in Ringgold to support veterans.
Tom retired after 27 years of service with the City of Chattanooga and served as Vice Mayor of East Ridge from 2002-2010. He loved to play softball and played for the church as well as a senior softball team. Tom also coached his son’s and grandson’s baseball teams. In his free time, Tom wrote music, played his guitar, and loved laughing and joking with his family. He had a great sense of humor, never met a stranger, and was always willing to help.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, J.T. and Kate Card; son, Thomas Paul Card, Jr.; brothers, Danny, Larry, and James Card; and parents-in-law, John and Margaret Perry.
Survivors include his loving and dedicated wife of 55 years, Mary Perry Card; son, John “Skip” Card; grandchildren, Chase Card (Shayne Holley) and Tinley Card; brother, Joe (Teresa) Card; many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
The family will receive friends on Monday, April 17, 2023 from 4-8 pm in the South Crest Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 18th, 2023 at 12:30pm with interment to follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
