Lucy Lopez Mazariegos scored on a breakaway goal with five minutes remaining to score the only goal in the game, as East Ridge edged Cleveland, 1-0, in girls’ high school soccer.
“It was a great, even match and a very physical game,” said Lady Pioneer coach Jeremy McIntyre.
Mazariegos’ goal came on an assist by Helen Sales. Goalkeeper Sarah Hudgens had 15 saves during the shutout.
The win moves East Ridge to 2-0 on the young season. The Lady Pioneers will host district rival Howard on Thursday at Camp Jordan. Game time is 7 p.m.
