This week is National Correctional Officers & Employees Week and in recognition of this designation, Sheriff Austin Garrett and the men and women of the HCSO would like to recognize our Corrections Services personnel who work tirelessly in the Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
National Correctional Officers & Employees Month was officially proclaimed by Presidential Proclamation in 1984 to take place the first week of May as a time to remember the work and sacrifices of America’s corrections officers and employees.
President Ronald Reagan said at the time, “The professionalism, dedication and courage exhibited by these [Correctional] officers throughout the performance of these demanding and often conflicting roles deserves our utmost respect. The important work of correctional officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections.”
In 1996, Congress expanded National Correctional Officers Week to include all correctional employees, giving a long overdue “Thank You” to all the women and men who serve by working in corrections. This is truly a special week to celebrate and bring awareness to the importance and significance of our profession.
“As we recognize National Correctional Officer Week, it is important we acknowledge the many contributions made to our community by our Corrections Deputies,” said Sheriff Austin Garrett. “Each and every day, they risk their well-being to ensure the safety of the inmates in our custody and help keep our county safe. This week is one opportunity for us to say thank you to those who proudly serve as corrections professionals and I am proud of the impact they make not only in the Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center, but our community as well.”
