East Ridge Firefighters rescued a woman from a second-story balcony as fire damaged a unit of the Summit Apartment complex on Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release, firefighters were dispatched to the apartments at 3725 Fountain Avenue at 4:56 p.m. on a reported apartment fire. When crews arrived, heavy smoke was coming from building No. 4. Firefighters evacuated the occupants of the building while another fire crew battled the blaze.
Fire Chief Mike Williams said firefighters used a ladder to rescue one resident from an outside balcony where she was trapped. Two occupants were treated on the scene by Hamilton County EMS but refused transport to a hospital.
Chief Williams said due to the cold, the clubhouse at the complex was used to shelter those affected by the fire. After firefighters conducted overhaul operations, the occupants of the apartments were allowed to return.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, Chief Williams said.
