The City of Fort Oglethorpe, the Catoosa County Chamber of Commerce, and Community Consultants are pleased to announce a joint partnership for future tourism opportunities.
With the recent transitioning and restructuring of the 6th Cavalry Museum and with the release of the strategic plan for the development of the Fort Oglethorpe Historic District, a need to create a welcome center that also tells the stories of our area’s rich history has been identified. The goal of this partnership will be to create an entity that does just that in a collaborative and creative way.
As our three organizations work together, community input will be welcomed and appreciated. We look forward to creating a place in the Fort Oglethorpe Historic District that provides visitors and citizens alike a place to learn about the area’s history and about all the exciting things that the city has to offer.
The museum has long been a hub of community involvement and activity, and we all value the vital role that it has played in Fort Oglethorpe for so many years. Those stories will continue to be honored and preserved while the museum’s staff focuses on wrapping up its current operations. Throughout 2022 and 2023, the museum staff will be cataloguing and preserving its assets and holdings. While this means that the museum will be taking on a different role than what many in our community are used to, it does not mean that the museum is ceasing its operations. The museum will continue to be open to the public on Fridays from 10 AM to 4 PM. Though private tours will be available upon request, the museum will no longer be renting its spaces to the public, as those areas will be needed as staff undergoes the meticulous inventory process.
In the coming months, a new tourism board will be assembled with representation from Fort Oglethorpe’s tourism partners, business owners, and community stakeholders.
