Sib Evans’ RBI single in the sixth inning proved the difference, as Catholic Baseball edged Grace Academy, 3-2, in an Independent School Conference game on Tuesday.
The win moved Catholic to 6-6 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in conference play. Catholic will travel to Soddy-Daisy today in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Grace took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a Lucas Candelaria home run to right. However, Catholic replied with two runs in the bottom of the inning, with Nick Pendergrass hit to right scoring a run, and Holder Donnelly’s dramatic steal at home plate.
An error by Catholic in the fifth allowed Grace to tie the game in the fifth inning, setting the stage for Evans’ game-winning hit.
Noah Winland, Catholic’s starter, gave up one hit and one run, while fanning two hitters in two and a third innings. Cooper Grant came on in relief and tossed two innings of shut-out baseball. He struck out three batters and walked two.
