USL League One to Begin Regular Season Play in Early May
Following the USL’s Board of Governors meeting, League One announced today that the 2021 regular season will begin on or about May 8 and will feature a 28-game slate running through October and a six-team playoff in November.
“Individuals and families are ready to enjoy safe outdoor activities, and a day watching the Red Wolves is an exciting way to do just that,” said President and General Manager Sean McDaniel. “We’re encouraged by the tremendous support our team has seen from our fans and we very much look forward to kicking off our season in pursuit of a 2021 championship.”
In favor of a flexible start date, the Governors have approved clubs to begin play as early as April 10 depending on conditions in their local communities. Further details and scheduling announcements will be made in the coming months and the league will continue to monitor the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the event alterations to the format need to be made.
“Now that we have an estimated kickoff date, we can begin working with our local elected officials and health agencies to ensure a safe and secure environment at CHI Memorial Stadium,” said McDaniel.
Stadium amenities to be completed this year include the Executive Club and Sky Suites, lighting, a video Jumbotron and digital field runner boards.
“Last season was historical for many reasons; one of the brighter ones being the fact that we were able to safely open up and play in Tennessee’s first professional soccer stadium,” said McDaniel. “Though CHI Memorial Stadium is already a top-class professional stadium, our planned additions will make our complex a destination in itself for soccer lovers near and far.”
