A Gail Drive man has been charged with kidnapping after he allegedly held his wife against her will and threatened to kill her.
Jose Andres Escobar-Rivas, 51, was booked into the Hamilton County Jail, Thursday, and charged with Aggravated Kidnapping and Aggravated Domestic Assault. He is being held on $5,000 bond and is due to appear in East Ridge Municipal Court on March 5.
According to an affidavit of complaint, on December 28, police met with Escobar-Rivas’s wife who said she had been abused by her husband. Due to a language barrier, the victim was unable to accurately explain to officers what had happened to her.

According to the report, the victim’s nephew was used as a translator and he conveyed that no physical assault had taken place. The nephew explained that the victim was only afraid of an assault and planned to move back to her homeland of El Salvador the following week. Police explained to the victim the process of obtaining an order of protection.
The report states that on Wednesday police again made contact with the victim at the East Ridge police station where she was accompanied by a translator from a battered women’s shelter. With the help of an actual translator more in-depth information was brought to light.
It was determined that Escobar-Rivas had held his wife in the house against her will for several days “tormenting her and threatening to kill her,” the report states. Escobar-Rivas, the report states, demonstrated how he planned to kill her with an ax and sword he keeps in the house.
The report states that the victim told police that Escobar-Rivas had physically assaulted her several times to include strangling her with a phone cord. The victim was able to recover her phone which had photos of her injuries consistent with her story.
The victim told police that her husband had gotten drunk and passed out one night and she was able to escape. Police escorted the victim to her house to obtain her belongings.
_ 4222 Ealy Rd.: Police were called to the address in the early morning hours of Tuesday in regard to vandalism. According to a police report, officers spoke with the resident of the house who said that he had gone to dinner on Monday evening. When he returned home he checked out his security cameras which caught what appeared to be a liquid substance being squirted onto his vehicles. The man told police he went out to his vehicles to investigate and detected a strong odor of urine on the vehicles. The report states that police viewed the surveillance video which showed the liquid – believed to be urine – was squirted over a fence from the adjoining house. No suspects were visible on the video. The report states that the victim believes the liquid was squirted over the fence by his neighbor who he has had issues with in the past. At the time of the report, police had yet to make contact with the neighbor the victim believes is responsible.
_ 6500 Block Burr St.: Police were called to the area on Monday evening after a man said the drone he was flying was shot out of the air. According to a police report, officers spoke with a man standing in the driveway of a home at 6511 Burr St. He said he was flying his drone in the area and believes that it was shot down. The man told police that as the drone was making its approach back to his home that he heard a loud pop and drone went offline. The report states that when he inspected the drone he saw that the camera was missing. Police did not observe any damage that would suggest that the drone was shot with any type of weapon. The report states that it is not known what caused the drone to crash. No “shots fired” calls were received by authorities in the area. The report states that the man firmly believed that a gunshot was the cause of the downed drone.
