It is up to grown-ups to take action in light of the recent school shootings.
Florida has adopted a common sense gun control law allowing teachers to “pack heat.” They also raised the legal age limit to 21! Ask the High School students in Florida what they think about AR’s. Take that NRA! We must have safer schools than we have now.
The Florida bill includes the following measures:
- Raise the age to purchase a firearm to 21.
- Require a three-day waiting period for firearm purchases, with some exception.
- Ban the sale or possession of bump fire stocks, which allow a semi-automatic weapon to fire more like an automatic weapon.
- Give law enforcement more authority to seize weapons and ammunition from those deemed mentally unfit or otherwise a threat.
- Provide additional funding for armed school resource officers and mental health services.
When we were little kids in school, we would have “tornado drills,” not “active shooter” drills. How can we turn our backs when it comes to our kids safety? Lots of people own guns, but few have a gun safe in the home! Also, how many people ACCIDENTALLY shoot themselves or others?
I think it is time for the nation to agree for paying for security in the schools. It is time to put our kids first. So many innocent lives have been lost on the concept of the NRA rights and lobbyist. The United States House of Representatives and Senate have experienced this personally during the shooting while playing baseball. Of course in the meantime, the Congressmen and Congresswomen accept donations from the NRA for their next political run for office!
I know that my personal stand on guns is not the opinion of most of Tennessee gun owners, and that is OK. However, Chattanooga need only remember the #NOOGASTRONG movement that arose in our community when five military service members were gunned down in the recruiting office in Chattanooga. These five souls were someone’s sons, fathers and brothers and loved one’s. Ask these families and survivors what they think about gun control! Ask Congressman Steve Scalise what he thinks about gun control.
It would be great if the gun vendors refused to sell the ammo for AR’s. Create a database of the AR ammo sold like they do the guns registrations. We can’t control the weapons that are already out there in the country but we can ban/control the ammo for the rifles.
Why can’t we do something about this before it happens again, which it will.
