_ 1523 Keeble St.: Police responded to Hide-A-Way Storage, Sunday night just before 11 p.m., on a complaint of a suspicious vehicle. According to a police report, a person called to report that a white VW Passat or Jetta with tinted windows was sitting in front of the office at the storage facility for about an hour with the front gate of the facility wide open. The vehicle left the area down Keeble Street toward the state line prior to police arrival. The report noted that there have been a large number of storage unit burglaries and thefts at the business.

The report states that when an officer arrived, the front gate was open, which is unusual. As the officer drove around the property he noticed several storage units with doors rolled up and no property inside as well as units with doors open and property inside, indicating a possible burglary. The officer continued to check the business and located an open gate on the north side of the business next to O’Reilly’s Auto Parts, which is also usually closed. In addition, the officer noticed a unit/office near the gate with lights on and the door unlocked

The report states that the officer did not have a back-up for “approximately 23 minutes.” When a back-up officer responded and they attempted to enter the unlocked unit, access was restricted due to a mattress on the floor and the officers hearing growling dogs farther inside the unit.

The report states that when officers entered another open unit they heard a door open in a unit behind them and a white male appeared in the doorway. The man who was identified as Michael Ingle couldn’t tell officers what he was doing there but that he wasn’t staying there. Ingle was detained, according to the report. A check of the East Ridge Municipal Court docket  showed that Ingle was to have appeared on Jan. 3 on drug charges.

The officers then saw five other people moving around inside and commanded them to come outside and assume positions on the wall until officers could secure the scene. The report states that “myself and officer Fults were severely outnumbered which posed a significant officer safety issue so the parties were held at gunpoint.” The report states that officers from the Chattanooga Police Department were summoned by dispatch “due to the circumstances and assisted with detaining the parties so a safe and thorough investigation could be done.”

The people were identified – four men and a woman – including one man who has an “extensive and violent history and is known to carry weapons even though he is a convicted felon out on parole from the state of Georgia.”

The manager of the facility was contacted and told police that one of the men detained was the “night watch” at the facility. The report states that the manager told police that only the night watchman was authorized to be on the premises and wanted the other people to be written citations for “Criminal Trespass.”

When the five people were checked for warrants, it was determined that the female, Shanna Szaltzer, 29, of a Hixson address, was wanted by Hamilton County authorities. The report states that Szaltzer was taken into custody and transported to the Hamilton County Jail. Jail records show that she was wanted for Forgery and Theft under $1,000.

According to the report, the manager told police that none of the units had been burglarized and the ones that were open with property in them were abandoned.

Jimmy Edward Palmer, Joshua Stevenson, John David Pickard Jr., Ingle and Szaltzer were all given citations for Criminal Trespass.

_ 728 Frawley Rd.: Police were dispatched to the address early Saturday morning to investigate a suspicious person. According to a police report, when an officer arrived he found a man and a woman sitting outside an apartment next to several backpacks. The people gave conflicting stories as to what they were doing there. Police received permission to search the purse of the woman – later identified as Sara Carroll – and inside they found a syringe. When police received permission to search her jacket pockets, they found four grams of suspected methamphetamine in a bag.

The report states that later on Saturday when police inventoried items recovered from the bags of the two people, they discovered a homework folder from a student at Soddy-Daisy Elementary School. Police contacted the mother of the student who told them that her vehicle had been broken into over the weekend and that her son’s backpack had been stolen. Police went to a Mooreview Road address where Carroll had told them she was before going to Frawley Road and found the stolen backpack from Soddy-Daisy in possession of Ashlin Silvey. Silvey was then arrested on outstanding warrants and the information about the car break-in was forwarded to Soddy-Daisy police. 

Carroll, 27 of a New Jersey Avenue address in Chattanooga, was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
