If your looking for some good deals and a bonus of helping a worthy cause you might be in luck.
On Saturday there will be a yard sale at the old McBrien School with all proceeds going to the East Ridge Needy Child Fund. The sale will be held from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“We’ve had a lot of stuff donated to us throughout the year and we thought we could put on a yard sale and it could help fund the (Needy Child Fund),” said East Ridge Fire Chief Mike Williams, who along with Susan Henson was sorting through donated items in front of the school on Friday afternoon.
The Needy Child Fund has been a long-time project headed up by the fire department. Each year the firefighters raise money to help people in the community who are having a hard time financially provide Christmas presents to kids who otherwise would go without.
This is the first year that the Needy Child Fund has had a yard sale, Henson said. All kinds of clothes _ men’s, women’s and children and school uniforms _ will be available for purchase dirt cheap, Henson said. Stump Martin donated a gross of athletic jerseys that will be for sale. In addition, there are some household items _ dining room table, chairs, coffee makers, toys and brick-a-brack _ that will also be offered for sale.
“This will help raise some money for the fund,” Henson said as she sorted through a massive stack of clothes. “This year we don’t have the money coming from the light show (Christmas Nights of Lights) down at the park.”
For the last two years, the proprietor of the Christmas Nights of Lights has donated a five-figure check to support the Needy Child Fund. Without that funding, which was a substantial, organizers have had to find a new way to raise money.
Chief Williams said this time of year and the day of the week is ideal for this fund-raising effort.
“What do people do around here on Saturday?” Williams asked. “They go do yard sales in the morning and then in the afternoon they go watch college football.”
