The 2016 class of the East Ridge High School Sports Hall of Fame has been announced.
Nine legends will be welcomed into the fraternity at halftime ceremonies at the East Ridge/Central football game on September 9, officials said.
The new members are as follows:
David Copeland (1964-67) _ Played football and track for three years. Copeland was the captain of both teams. He went to the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship.
Carlene Elliott Ryon (1964-67) _ Ryon was named the school’s Most Outstanding Athlete. She played basketball and volleyball during her three years of athletic competition.
Steve Moore (1964-67) _ Moore earned seven varsity letters in his playing days at East Ridge. He played football, basketball and baseball for three years. Moore went to Memphis State on a football scholarship.
Doug Rosser _ An ardent fan and contributor to East Ridge athletics of all types since 1968. Rosser has coached, taught and helped build athletic facilities at the school. He may be most noted for operating the chains at ERHS football games.
Earl Shanks (1958-62) _ The first football coach for the Pioneers, the field was named in his honor. Shanks was additionally recognized by the school for having the 1962 Annual named in his honor.
Cindy Straussberger Howard (1967-70) _ Howard was the hero of the longest girls’ basketball game ever played, as she sank the winning basket in a 16-overtime win against Ooltewah. She played basketball and volleyball for three years during her athletic career.
Glenn Turner (1962-65) _ An All State Honorable Mention in basketball, Turner went on to play freshman basketball for Georgia. In addition to his basketball career, he played baseball for the Pioneers.
Jim White (1962-65) _ An All State football player, White went on to play in college at UT-Martin. White played football and baseball for three years in the Orange and White.
Danny Williams (1966-69) _ Established a school record in the high jump (6-foot, 6 inches). Williams’ leaping ability earned him a scholarship to the University of Georgia. He not only excelled in track but played basketball at East Ridge for three years.
