South Georgia Tormenta FC downed the Red Wolves, 2-1, Sunday in Statesboro to become the USL League One Champions.
Jamil Roberts came off the bench to score the game’s winning goal in the 82nd minute of play. Roberts’ goal came off an assist by Kazaiah Sterling, who scored the first goal of the match off a penalty kick in the 35th minute.
The Red Wolves tied the match when Jose Carrera-Garcia’s 45-yard free kick from the left sideline to the right side of the box allowed Alex Tejera to score on a header.
About 200 fans gathered at CHI Memorial Stadium for a watch party of ESPN’s telecast which was up on the stadium’s huge videoboard.
The fourth-seeded Red Wolves finished the season with a 14-12-7 record. Tormenta, the tournament’s third seed, became the first team to win the USL League One Championship that did not finish atop the regular-season standings.
