NASHVILLE – State Rep. Esther Helton-Haynes, R-East Ridge, and State Sen. Richard Briggs, MD, R-Knoxville, have been named recipients of the Charles E. Darling Organization of Excellence Award by the Tennessee Primary Care Association (TPCA).
The award recognizes a team or organization that has exhibited innovation and dedication to the delivery of primary care to vulnerable populations. It was presented during the TPCA’s annual conference at the Embassy Suites in Franklin, Tenn. on Thursday, Oct. 6.
“As a nurse, I know how important it is for patients to have access to high-quality, affordable health care,” Helton-Haynes said. “I am honored to receive this award and will continue to look for ways to improve our health care system for all Tennesseans.”
The lawmakers were recognized for their efforts in passing important health care reforms that protect patients and community health groups in Tennessee by safeguarding the integrity of the 340B Drug Pricing Program. The legislation prevents discriminatory reimbursement practices by pharmacy benefit managers and ensures that patients can receive medications from the participating pharmacies of their choice.
“I am honored to receive this award,” said Briggs. “Quality primary care is critical in the prevention and detection of life-threatening diseases and conditions. As a cardiac surgeon, I know how important primary care physicians and nurses are in the early detection of heart disease. Their keen awareness and relationships with their patients save lives. I am happy to support the Tennessee Primary Care Association as they continue to provide quality care to Tennesseans.”
The TCPA Executive Committee of the Board evaluated all nominees and chose the recipients. The award is named in honor of Dr. Charles E. Darling who dedicated his life to serving the prenatal health needs of women in East Tennessee, regardless of their ability to pay.
